Haavind partner Helge Olav Bergan was recently appointed by the Ministry of Culture, as leader of a committee to evaluate the Norwegian regulation of media responsibility and liability, including editorial responsibility for online publications and social media.
Bergan replaces lawyer Janne Kristiansen, who resigned the position to take up the post of leader of The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST).
Helge Olav Bergan has been a partner in the leading Norwegian independent law firm Haavind since 2001. He heads the firm’s Media and Entertainment practice area, and has particular strong knowledge of intellectual property, broadcasting and media law.
The Media Liability Committee was formed by the Ministry in July 2009 with a mandate to evaluate the regulation of media responsibility and liability, including editorial responsibility for online publications and social media. The mandate also includes evaluation of liability for damages, corporate penalty, liability for breach of the Personal Data Act, source protection, registration issues and the possible need for special statutory rules or services that secure the personal protection of private individuals caught in the headlights of the media.
The Committee attempts to bridge the gap between the existing framework and the requirements of today’s world.
